By Acts 8 the church had grown, been persecuted with Saul on the rampage and scattered throughout Samaria and Judea.
When Philip powerfully declared the gospel in Samaria, a man called Simon came to faith. He was well known in the area for practicing sorcery, and boasted that he was someone great. The people even called him 'the Great Power of God'
After being baptized Simon followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles.
But when Simon saw that the Spirit was imparted by the apostles laying their hands on believers, he wanted that ability too, offering money in exchange for the gift.
Here is Peter's response: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
This is a harsh but valuable lesson for Simon and for us also.
NOTHING ON EARTH CAN BUY THE THINGS OF HEAVEN
EXCEPT... A HUMBLE AND BELIEVING HEART.
