Polonnaruwa Snuffed Out
... is the second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms. It’s a royal city decorated in stone carvings, staircases and imposing columns.
I find medieval kingdoms fascinating, and like most people, walk quietly trying to imagine the courtyards full of life as in its golden age.
It was established as the seat of rule in 1070 AD with king Vijayabahu defeating South Indian invaders, and dreaming to reunite his people under local leadership. It flourished in trade & agriculture but was still susceptible to invasion, so only 400 years later Polonnaruwa was abandoned.
Today this ancient city is a World Heritage Site, and quiet reminder that earthly kingdoms can shift and die.
In contrast, the prophet Samuel told King David that the Lord would establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Approximately 1200 years later, through David’s descendant Jesus, the kingdom of heaven invaded earth!
This everlasting leader and high priest reclaimed everything that was plundered in Eden.... Which includes us!
Now alive and seated at the right hand of God, his kingdom will never end in ruins for world heritage listing. Ephesians 1:20-23.
There’s only a future, that all nations are invited to share as sons and daughters of the Most High God.
