Isaiah 40:3-5 Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, “Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God! Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places. Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The Lord has spoken!”
This scripture is a beautiful description of re-shaping the landscape. I used to read this passage as clearing away scrub and trees, but the wasteland has none. Now I see it as a bulldozer moving the earth around. The clues are in the words 'filling', 'leveling' and 'straightening'. It's all to make the landscape flat so that an easy path is made for people to return to the Lord
What are those valleys and mountains? They are mountains of pride and valleys of hurt. Things that obstruct us from reaching God... And in our interactions with people, we can all act as landscape artists. We remove obstacles or mountains with truth and we fill in valleys with kindness and grace.
The scripture says, 'the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all the people will see it'. If a person is in a valley they can't see His glory, and if they are perched on a mountain top they may miss it also.
All this landscaping is to clear the way for people to see His glory, and His glory is that he's good. We can count on his heart towards us to ALWAYS be good.
