Back from the Ends of the Earth
"But as for you, Israel my servant, Jacob my chosen one descended from Abraham my friend, I have called you back from the ends of the earth... and will not throw you away..... Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand."
Looking at this list, it's encouraging to see that the Lord picks those in obscurity and brokenness for His service. The nation of Israel was an unfaithful idolater, Jacob a fearful liar and Abraham a scoundrel yet this scripture says each of them were called from the 'ends' of the earth. Things at the 'end' are often forgotten and discarded. It reminds me of a rubbish dump, which is located on the outskirts of town. It's the place where you take the broken and ugly pieces of life. Nobody wants to see them in anything but landfill. Their usefulness is spent and their purpose is gone.
We can be broken in life, with circumstances or people taking us to the 'outskirts' for dumping. Sometimes our own discouragement is deep enough that we withdraw from life and discard ourselves. But according to this scripture the Lord isn't prepared to throw us away. We are not to be discouraged or afraid of where we've come from, because He promises to strengthen and uphold those who are lowly and cracked.
The 'ends' don't mean the end of us. It's simply a place to travel home from. The Lord not only welcomes us back for restoration but for reinstatement to meaningful positions in life.
